David Ortiz hit his 500th career home run Saturday at Tropicana Field. The Red Sox slugger blasted an 80-mph curveball from the Rays’ Matt Moore over the wall in right center in the fifth inning.

Ortiz, who has 34 homers on the season, trails Eddie Murray by four home runs for 26th place on the all-time home run list. The solo homer was his second long ball on the night. He also connected on a three-run homer in the first.
Ortiz’s 500th home run was the 1,628th career RBI for the 39-year-old, tying Harold Baines for 31st on the all-time list.
“Big Papi” is 27th player to hit 500 homers. The last player to hit No. 500 for the Red Sox was Manny Ramirez in 2008.
