As explained by Kojima, no one on his team at the new Kojima Productions understood what he was trying to make with Death Stranding because the game is going to be something that hasn’t been seen before. Unfortunately, Kojima didn’t elaborate on how Death Stranding is going to be this wildly new concept in terms of story or gameplay design, so fans will have to keep guessing until we are shown more of the game.

For what it’s worth, Kojima’s development team members aren’t alone when it comes to struggling to understand Death Stranding. In fact, one of the game’s stars, award-winning actor Mads Mikkelsen, has also expressed confusion about the game in the past. Speaking to attendees at the Saudi Comic Con earlier this year, Mikkelsen said that he “got lost” when listening to Kojima elaborate on the game’s story, but that it intrigued him enough that he wanted to learn more about the game.

Some fans may be concerned that so many people seem confused by Death Stranding, but if anything, this is par for the course when it comes to Hideo Kojima. Kojima has a reputation for creating games with unique gameplay features and complex, sometimes confusing storylines, and it sounds like Death Stranding will be no different.

Even so, it would be nice to learn more concrete details about Death Stranding, and its absence from E3 is still disappointing. Perhaps we will learn more about the game at the PlayStation Experience in December, and if so, hopefully we can get some answers in regards to the game’s plot, gameplay features, and whether or not there is any truth to the Emma Stone casting rumors.

Death Stranding is in development for PS4.
