Even though Death Stranding has been featured at many major industry events like TGS and E3, it remains a game that still has so many question marks surrounding it. One thing that has never been made clear outside of actual gameplay mechanics is a release date. While individuals and industry analysts like Michael Pachter have predicted Death Stranding would get a PlayStation 5 release, it’s now looking more and more likely thanks to the admission that the PS5 will be backward compatible with PS4 games.

With all of the talk surrounding the PlayStation 5, Sony remains firm in its stance that Death Stranding will arrive on the PS4. While the company didn’t outright confirm that Death Stranding could also see a release on both platforms, Cerny wasn’t able to keep a straight face when asked about it directly. Following the question, Cerny kept quiet for a longer than normal period of time as a noticeable smile quickly spread on his face, no doubt inviting plenty of speculation as to whether or not this was subtle confirmation on a two-platform launch.

Death Stranding isn’t the only PlayStation game that’s currently shrouded in mystery. In fact, most of the games that Sony showcased at its E3 presentation last year all could be two-platform releases as well.

With the PlayStation 5 expected to launch next year and no clear release dates settled for games like The Last of Us 2 and Ghost of Tsushima, Sony could be preparing one of the biggest launch windows for its upcoming hardware release. Naturally, Sony would likely be careful to ensure that these games wouldn’t cannibalize each other by releasing at the same time, so it’s possible that the Death Stranding, The Last of Us 2, and Ghost of Tsushima could be getting a staggered release over the course of the first few weeks and months following the launch of the PlayStation 5.

Death Stranding is currently in development for PlayStation 4.
