While Kojima didn’t offer details, he did say that he wants to do “something different” with Death Stranding’s multiplayer. Presumably, this means fans shouldn’t expect Death Stranding to have online deathmatches or something along those lines. A more likely scenario is that the game will have online social features similar to the ones seen in Kojima’s most recent release, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.
Kojima’s vague tease about Death Stranding’s multiplayer may not leave some fans very satisfied, but it’s the most he’s said about it in the past year. And with all the trailers for the game mainly focusing on its single player story, it would be easy to forgive fans if they forgot Death Stranding even had online multiplayer functionality of some kind in the works.
So, when can fans expect to learn more about Death Stranding’s multiplayer? Well, no one should expect any concrete details for awhile. After all, we haven’t seen any actual gameplay footage of Death Stranding yet, though thanks to Guillermo del Toro, we know that the game does exist in a playable form. Since the game is a narrative-driven experience, it seems likely that fans will see single player gameplay long before anything more is shared about its multiplayer functionality.
Perhaps 2018 will be the year that Death Stranding fans finally get a better idea of what to expect from Hideo Kojima’s strange new game. There will be plenty of opportunities for the game to make an impact throughout the new year, including next summer’s E3 2018 event and The Game Awards 2018, so hopefully Death Stranding enthusiasts are rewarded for their patience.
Death Stranding is in development for PS4.
