The Death Stranding trailer opens with Reedus waking up on a beach, wearing nothing but dog tags, inscribed with an equation that relates to black holes, and a bracelet that is attached by an artificial umbilicus to a crying infant, as Reedus cradles the child, the shot pulls back to reveal a barren beach littered with the corpses of beached whales. Since its release, the Death Stranding trailer has been under intense examination by many people in an attempt to glean whatever clues can be found about the game’s story, and has lead to some interesting theories about the meaning of what is seen in the trailer.

Kojima has already made some very mysterious statements about Death Stranding, perhaps the most cryptic and enticing being that “the game has already begun.” But, in a recent interview, Kojima further fed the flames of fan’s curiosity by laying some of the theories to rest, while giving vague confirmation to others.

In the interview, Kojima revealed that the baby is not a clone of Reedus, and when asked about the dog tag/black hole theory he stated, “What I will say is, I wanted people to find those…” Kojima went on to say in the interview that the trailer was not meant, as some speculated, to be a dig at Kojima’s former employer, Konami, who was set to be the publisher of Silent Hills.

When asked about the trailer being a metaphor for Kojima’s relationship with Konami, he stated, “I thought people might link it but there’s no connection in there." Kojima also confirmed that the teaser trailer is “representative” of the final game. Kojima doesn’t have a firm release date for Death Stranding, stating that the game won’t be in full production until he decides which game engine to use, which Kojima insists will happen “very soon.”

How do these latest Death Stranding hints from Kojima change fan theories? And will Death Stranding be able to live up to this much hype?

Death Stranding will be a PS4 exclusive, and its release date has not been announced.
